Temple of the Tooth Relic – Ancient city of Kandy

 
 

For Buddhists who live throughout the country the tooth relic of the Buddha is the most sacred relic of all. It has been kept inside the Temple of the Tooth Relic for over four centuries. Buddhists all over the world respect and worship the relic.

The old city of Kandy and the buildings belonging to it, including this temple, are considered a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Dambulla Cave Temple  
 

This 2nd Century B.C. cave temple is known to be the largest cave temple in Sri Lanka. In this can be seen sculptures from that era to the 12th Century, and 17-19 th Century paintings. It is categorized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Sigiriya Rock Fortress
  This 5th Century rock fortress and its terraces are the best preserved of their kind in the country. Sigiriya is also very famous forits 5th century frescos and its poetical ‘graffiti’. The fortress was created by King Kashyapa, who reigned A.D. 477-495, one of the most interestings monarchs of Sri Lanka.

Anuradhapura
 

Anuradhapura was the first capital city of Sri Lanka, and the greatest monastic city in the Island. It served as the capital for about 1,400 years (161 B.C.-1073 A.D.). It was the seat of a succession of 113 kings, who produced magnificent palaces, sculptures, pleasure gardens, huge Dagobas .

Polonnaruwa
 

Polonnaruwa was the medieval capital of Sri Lanka. From 993 A.D. the Cholas used it as their military base for 77 years. King Vijayabahu I defeated them in 1073 A.D., and developed irrigation in the area, and gave patronage to Buddhism. The famous kings Parakramabahu, who assumed control of the whole island, and Nissankamalla were his successors..
