Fighting our way through the city’s school run traffic (!) we headed for Udawatekela, forest reserve on the outskirts of Kandy. Stork Billed Kingfisher on the lakeside was a good bird to see whilst stuck in the queue of vehicles. There were only a few species at Udawatakele but we got our best views of the endemic Brown Capped Babbler
Then on to Sigiriya, stopping at a batik factory and spice garden en route. We were in Sigiriya for lunch at our beautifully located hotel where you can lie in the swimming pool and look up at the famous rock. Exploring the wetland and forest around the base of the rock we had our best views of the endemic Ceylon Pigeon.
