Birds and Wildlife of Sinharaja – October 30 to November 01

For bird watchers, nature and wildlife enthusiasts living in Sri Lanka

This trip is cancelled due to current Covid 19 situation in the country.

A three-day (two nights) trip to the Sinharaja rainforest to explore, learn about and understand its unique bird life and other wildlife. The experience is organized and will be guided by the expert team of the internationally acclaimed Sri Lankan nature tour operator Bird and Wildlife Team, which has been providing their high-quality services to foreign bird watchers and wildlife enthusiasts for the past many years in Sri Lanka and also in India.

On this trip the Team expects to provide a sound insight to Sri Lanka’s biodiversity-rich rainforest ecosystem for the participants through observations of the birds, other animals, plants and trees living in this unique habitat You will also have opportunities to photograph many of these fauna and flora met in the forest with the guidance of the Team.

During the field observation sessions, beyond the view through your binocular (it is recommended that you bring one), every five to six participants in the group will have access to one high-quality telescope to study closely the subjects being observed.

During the stay the Team will also present short illustrated talks and interim discussions on the topics mentioned below to further your knowledge and understanding of our rainforest ecosystem.

• Introduction to rainforest birds
• introduction to bird watching and identification
• introduction to the other wildlife of the rainforest
• introduction to ‘flock feeding’ by rainforest birds
• introduction to rainforest ecology
• introduction to optics for bird and wildlife observation, and
• introduction to wildlife photography.

Planned program
There will be four half-day nature walks conducted during the two-night stay. The program in outline is as follows • Leaving Colombo on Friday 30 Oct. morning • reach Kudawa village by late morning • switch to jeeps from there and drive up to the forest lodge near the main entrance of the rainforest • Afternoon nature walk on Friday • pre-dinner illustrated talks and discussions • Morning and afternoon nature walks on Saturday 31 followed by pre-dinner illustrated talks and discussions • Morning nature walk on Sunday 1 Nov., and • in the afternoon leave for Colombo.

Transport
From Colombo to Kudawa and back to Colombo in a comfortable air-conditioned luxury mini-bus. From Kudawa to the forest lodge and back in jeeps.

Accommodation
At Martin’s Forest Lodge situated near the main entrance to the forest, twin sharing rooms and limited single rooms, all with attached bathrooms. This is a rather basic forest lodge but situated with a nice forest background and at a very convenient place to walk into the forest. For many years now it has been very popular amongst foreign birdwatchers and also local birdwatchers or nature lovers who visit Sinharaja.

Group size
Minimum 12 participants, and up to maximum of 14.

Cost
LKR 28,000 per person on a twin sharing room basis.
Single room supplement: LKR 5000 for single room occupancy (please note that only a limited number of single rooms is available*).

Deposit needed to confirm a place on the trip: LKR 5000 per person.

The cost covers only:
• All transport from Colombo and back • accommodation with full board (breakfast, lunch and dinner, these main meals beginning with lunch on the first day – Friday – to lunch on the third day – Sunday) • entrance fees to the Forest Reserve, and • services of the organizers.

 

Terms and conditions
To confirm the booking of a place in the group for a person the deposit has to be made for each person. In the event of cancellation of a booking by a participant before two weeks from the scheduled trip date a full refund of the deposit will be made by the organizers.

If a cancellation is made by a participant within two weeks of the scheduled trip date then the deposit will be non-refundable. However, if the relevant participant who cancels the booking is able to find a replacement person to fill the vacant place in the group then the organizers will refund the deposit.

In event of the trip being cancelled by the organizers at any time due to an unforeseen or unavoidable reason the participants who have booked places will get a full refund of the money they have paid up to that date.

The balance payment has to be made by a participant who has booked a place in the group two weeks prior to the scheduled trip date.

* Limited single-room occupancy is available at the lodge – only four single rooms can be provided.

Please note that due to the limited room availability at the lodge the room allocation, either twin sharing room or single room occupancy, for participants who book places on the trip will be done on ‘first come first served’ basis.
