Visa information

Holliday or business travelers need to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) in order to visit Sri Lanka. This procedure has been implemented with effect from the 1st of January 2012 the Department of Immigration and Emigration Sri Lanka. With globalization and availability of computerization, formalities are somewhat more rapidly expedited (depending on the type of visa). ETA fees differ from country to country, the type of visa and duration of stay. Payments should be made through the ETA website and not at the port of entry to Sri Lanka.

Children under 12 years of age need a visa but it will be free of charge.

A Tourist Visit Visa is issued for a short period of time for those who wish to come to Sri Lanka for travel purposes or to relax.

Transit Visa which allows foreign nationals to enter Sri Lanka for a short period of time when they are en-route to another destination.

Irrespective of your Visa Type if you wish to extend your visa you need to make an application to the Department of Immigration and Emigration.

Four types of Sri Lankan visas exist under which non-Sri Lankans can legitimately enter the country. Each VISA contains information about the period of time and the condition/s of stay.

Passport Requirements:
For travel to Sri Lanka, the traveler must carry an original, signed passport valid for 6 months beyond stay, with at least one blank visa page available for stamp(s). Amendment pages in the back of the passport are not suitable for stamps. The Sri Lanka visa (ETA) is electronic and will not be inside the passport.

Proof of Departure:
A confirmed, round-trip or onward airline ticket at the point of entry.

Financial Requirements:
Traveler must have sufficient funds to support themselves during visit to Sri Lanka.

Note: Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA visa) information is stored electronically. ‘The traveler will not receive any document with regards to visa from Bird and Wildlife Team (Pvt.) Ltd. This type of Sri Lankan visa is approved and sent electronically (via email) by Department of Immigration and Emigration Sri Lanka.’

Sri Lanka Visa Validity:
An electronic Sri Lanka business visa (ETA visa) is generally valid for multiple entries within three months, and allows a stay of up to 30 days in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lankan Visa Processing Time:
A Sri Lanka visa application for ETA is generally processed in 48 hours (Monday through Friday).
